WESTON, Mass. – For the second-straight game, sophomore Nicky Rodrigo (Miami, Fla.) had four goals and an assist, while Peter Leighton (Wilmington, Mass.) had three goals and two assists for five points of his own as Regis College cruised to a 16-2 victory over Thomas College on Saturday afternoon in non-conference men's lacrosse action. The Pride improve to 3-2 on the season, while Thomas falls to 0-4 in 2014.
Nine different players recorded at least one point for the Pride including Rodrigo and Leighton. Matt Vogan (Billerica, Mass.) had three goals and an assist and Andrew O'Reilly (Hollis, N.H.) had a pair of goals and one helper. Billy Stewart (West Roxbury, Mass.) recorded three assists, while Peter Fucci (Amherst, N.H.) had a goal and an assist, and Alex Ferran (Miami, Fla.) had a pair of goals. Chris Campbell (South Hadley, Mass.) had a goal, while Nick Romig (Dedham, Mass.) had one assist.
Brandon Mehler (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Zach Roy (Saugus, Mass.) led the Regis defense with five groundballs apiece, while O'Reilly, Leighton, and Fucci had four groundballs each. Josh Healy (Colchester, Conn.), Roy, and Fucci each had a pair of caused turnovers as well.
Breandan Crane (Billerica, Mass.) picked up his third win of the season while making five saves in the first half of play. D.J. Barrile (Medford, Mass.) and Tyler Estes (Geneva, Ill.) split the last two quarters, combining for four saves.
For Thomas, Gunnar Shelton (Eugene, Ore.) and Bryan Ferris (Whitman, Mass.) each recorded goals, with Jordan Marino (Londonderry, N.H.) adding an assist. Carlos Cardona (Zephyrhills, Fla.) made four saves in net for the Terriers. Sheldon Jones (Lewiston, Maine) led the Terriers defense with a game-high six groundballs and four caused turnovers. Cardona also added four groundballs.
Regis outshot Thomas at a 42-29 clip and held a 40-23 advantage in groundballs. The Pride won 13-of-22 face-offs, led by an 8-for-11 showing from Jack O'Brien (Milton, Mass.), and were 5-for-7 on the man advantage. The Regis defense was 18-for-22 on clear attempts, while Thomas went 12-for-20.
The Pride jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Leighton and Ferran before Gunnar Shelton tallied for the Terriers to make it 2-1. The Pride then scored the last three goals of the first quarter, including a pair from Matt Vogan, to take a 5-1 lead at the end of one. Regis tacked on three more in the second quarter and took a commanding 8-1 lead into the break.
Out of the half, Bryan Ferris made it an 8-2 game as he worked a quick give-and-go with Jordan Marino that led to an open shot and a goal. The Pride were undeterred however, as they scored the final eight goals of the game, en route to the 16-2 win.
The Crimson and Gold return to action on Tuesday when they host Green Mountain College at 5:00 p.m. Thomas continues the search for their first win of the year next Saturday when they travel to Castleton for a 12:00 p.m. NAC contest.
