Men’s Basketball Bested by Monks in GNAC Quarterfinal

STANDISH, Maine. - Regis College was defeated, 79-63, by Saint Joseph's College of Maine in the quarterfinals of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Basketball Tournament Tuesday night at the Harold Alfond Center.

Jamir Harvey (Robbins, Ill.) led the Pride with 15 points and 15 rebounds to pick up the double-double while Justin Evelyn (Uniondale, N.Y.) added 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Zakaria Latifi (Norwood, Mass.) and Devante Thompson (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) both finished with 11 points.

Twos by Evelyn and Harvey and a three-pointer by Latifi put the Pride up 7-2 early on in the contest. Later, threes by Thompson and Evelyn kept Regis in the lead but back-to-back layups by Julian Llopiz retook the advantage for the home team as consecutive threes by Ashtyn Abbott and Teagan Hynes put the Monks up by 11 (30-19) with under seven minutes remaining in the first half.

After losing the first half by a margin of 39-24, the second looked much better for the Pride as they managed to score 39 compared to 40 by the Monks. The Pride cut the deficit to nine points (45-36) off a seven-point scoring run which included a layup by Harvey and three-pointers by Evelyn and Thompson.

Regis would come within nine (59-50) again later in the half off of free throws from Cameron Wilkins (Taunton, Mass.) and Harvey but Llopiz managed to keep the Monks on top, going a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the three-point line to finish with 11 points in the half.

Llopiz led the Monks and all scorers with 20 points coming off the bench while Abbott added 14 points and six rebounds. John Paul Frazier also came off the bench to contribute 11 points while Camryn Yorke finished with nine points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Regis sees its 2022-23 season conclude with a 14-12 overall record. Saint Joseph's College of Maine (14-12) will face the University of Saint Joseph in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament Thursday, Feb. 23, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
