Regis Men’s Basketball Loses at #6 USJ

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Regis College lost to the University of Saint Joseph, 95-54, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the O'Connell Center.

Marc Trinidad (Bronx, N.Y.) led the Pride with 10 points, plus he pulled down eight rebounds. Tate Pike (Bellingham, Mass.) scored nine points off the bench, Cameron Wilkins (Taunton, Mass.) collected eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Thomas Ahlstrom (San Antonio, Texas) added eight points and six rebounds.

Saint Joseph (9-0, 4-0 GNAC), ranked sixth in this week's D3Hoops.com Top 25 Poll, scored the first six points of the game before Regis responded with the next five points. Jake Sullivan hit a three-pointer to start another 6-0 run for the Blue Jays, but the Pride stayed close thanks to a 9-4 scoring run that was capped by a three-pointer from Joshua Perez (Lynn, Mass.).

The Blue Jays pulled away in the final seven-and-a-half minutes of the first half thanks to a 20-2 scoring run, and then they scored the first five points of the second half on a three-pointer by Ryan O'Neill and a steal and layup by Sullivan. The home team continued to pressure the Pride, holding them scoreless for over five straight minutes in the second half on the way to USJ's ninth straight victory this season.

Chaylyn Martin led the Blue Jays with 16 points, six rebounds, and six steals, while Jordan Powell and Nadir Dixon-Thompson finished with 10 points apiece. In total, 14 different players scored for USJ as it shot 54.3 percent (38-for-70) from the field, including 6-for-12 from behind the three-point line, and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the free throw line.

As a team, the Pride shot 31 percent (18-for-58) from the field and 70 percent (14-for-20) from the free throw line. Regis struggled against the tough defense of the Blue Jays, as USJ scored 28 points off 28 Pride turnovers.

Regis College (4-6, 1-3 GNAC) hosts Elms College Monday, Jan. 10, starting at 6 p.m. and Johnson & Wales Wednesday, Jan. 12, beginning at 7 p.m.
