Men's Basketball Defeated by Albertus Magnus

WESTON, Mass. - Three players finished in double figures for the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team on Thursday evening, but the Pride was unable to get past Albertus Magnus, falling to the Falcons 77-62 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at Higgins Court.

With the win, Albertus stays perfect in conference action at 10-0 and 13-4 overall. The Pride loses its three-game winning streak with the defeat, falling to 6-3 in the GNAC and 9-8 overall.

The Falcons got off to a hot start, jumping out to a quick 12-2 lead in the game's opening three and a half minutes. A string of threes, two from Roger Hamel (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and one from Shaun Wingfield (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) put the Pride back in the game with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 12-11.

The run was short-lived, as the Falcons went on a 10-2 run of their own in response to the triples forcing the Pride to take a timeout down 22-13 with 9:28 left in the first half. The teams would go to the locker room with the Falcons ahead 33-19 and holding the host Pride to just 22 percent shooting (8-for-36).

The Pride was unable to cut into the Albertus Magnus lead in the second half as the Falcons dominated the boards as the Pride's offensive struggles continued. The Pride made a late run to cut a 20-point second half deficit to 11 with a touch over two minutes to go, but could not cut the lead any further.

One of the nation's top scorers and rebounders, Albertus Magnus senior Jaqhawn Walters (Hartford, Conn.) had himself a game, recording 20 points and 22 rebounds on the night. Walters was matched by the Pride's Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.), who tied for the game-high with 20 points of his own. Hamel and Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.) each had 10 points for the Pride in the loss. Every Albertus starter finished in double figures on the evening.

Next up for the Falcons, they'll host the Saints of Emmanuel College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The Pride will travel to Saint Joseph's (Me.) the same day for a 1:00 p.m. tip off against the Monks.
