Men's Basketball Holds On For Road Win At Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. - Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) led four players in double figures with a game-high 21 points and the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team held on for a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference win, 87-85 over Rivier Thursday at Muldoon Gymnasium.

Afonja shared game high points honors with Tristian Givens (Windsor, Conn.) while also collecting eight rebounds. Classmate Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) collected 12 points and eight rebounds with junior Jordan Seldon (Dorchester, Mass.) totaling 11 points. Junior Tim Broom (Jacksonville, Fla.) chipped in 13 points in a reserve effort for the Pride (8-7, 5-2 GNAC).

In total, four different Rivier (1-15, 0-7 GNAC) student-athletes registered double-digit nights led by Givens (Windsor, Conn.). Classmates Issaiah Chappelle (Sunapee, N.H.) and Joshua L'Heureux (Dracut, Mass.) each netted 16 points while freshman Tarik Rivers (Stamford, Conn.) finished with 11 points.

The game was close throughout with neither team leading by more than six points. Regis held a one-point lead with just under seven minutes to play before Seldon sank a free throw to complete a three-point play and push the lead to four.

Rivier responded with six unanswered points before Afonja and Broom both knocked down a pair of foul shots and scored in the paint to give their team a 79-74 lead with 3:41 to play. Down the stretch it would be solid defense and a steady hand at the foul line that pulled the Pride through with the victory.

Next up for the Pride is another GNAC contest on Saturday, Jan. 20 against Mount Ida at 3:00 p.m. The Raiders will host Norwich University the same day.
