Wedderburn Grabs A Career High 13 Rebounds, Men's Basketball Falls At Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt - Ademola Afonja had a team-best 13 points and Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx. N.Y.) grabbed a game and career-high 13 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Regis (Mass.) basketball team fell 71-63 at Norwich in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Thursday night.

The Cadets came out of the gate hot, shooting a blistering 55.6% from the field in the first half and an even more impressive 57.1% from 3-point land. That offensive effort, coupled with holding Regis to a mere 36.7% shooting percentage in the half, helped send the Cadets into the break with a 40-31 advantage over the Pride.

Throughout the second half Regis hung with the Cadets, never letting NU run away with the game but never quite bringing the score even. Things got interesting when a Wedderburn free throw brought the Pride within three points of the Cadets with just over three minutes to go.

Norwich's defensive unit stayed tough, and the combination of senior Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) and freshman Kyle Booth (Northfield, Vt.) sealed the deal for the Cadets down the stretch, scoring 8 of the team's final 9 points to seal the 71-63 Norwich victory. Booth led the way with a game-high 17 points, while Sirvydas dropped in 13 points of his own. As a team, the Cadets shot 47.6% from 3-point territory on the day while holding the Pride to a paltry 13% from deep.

The win is Norwich's second GNAC victory of the year and bumps the Cadets' overall record to 4-8 overall this year with a 2-2 mark within the conference. The Pride fall to 6-7 but remain above. 500 in GNAC play at 3-2. Regis hosts Suffolk this Saturday, Jan. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
