Afonja, Lewis With Double Doubles, Pride Top FSU In Home Opener

WESTON, Mass.Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) corralled a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with 14 points to lead the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team to a home opening 57-49 win over Framingham State Tuesday night at Higgins Court.

Regis didn't shoot particularly well from the floor but attacked the glass to the tune of 50 rebounds, 24 on the offensive end. Jawaun Lewis (Jacksonville, Fla.) added a double double of his own with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Pride (2-2) who led by as many as 19 points.

Tyri Hampton (Fitchburg, Mass.) scored a game-high 16 points for FSU (1-3) with Charles Valbrun (Hyde Park, Mass.) adding a team-high six boards.

Regis had it going early, scoring the game's first 14 points before the Rams finally got on the board just over eight minutes into the game. Afonja was dominant in the run, scoring six points and grapping five rebounds.

The Pride kept up the solid defensive effort and a double digit lead when Lewis drove into the paint and put down a one-hand flush to put his team up 20-8 with 6:46 to play in the period.

Scoring would be at a premium over the next several minutes before Afonja muscled his way into the paint and scored an and-one bucket, throwing down a one-handed jam as the Pride took a 32-15 lead into halftime.

The second half saw a Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) three and an and-one fast break bucket by Shawn Wedderburn (Bronx, N.Y.) push the lead to 44-25 with 12:32 to play, but Framingham State wouldn't let the game get out of reach.

Steve Vayda's elbow three and later back-to-back buckets by Manny Payton (Fitchburg, Mass.) shaved the Pride's lead to just eight points. Payton later drained a three pointer to cut the lead to six points with just over a minute to play, but Regis would hold on for the victory.

The Pride next take the court this Sunday, Nov. 26 at Rhode Island College. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m. FSU visits Wheaton (Mass.) on Tuesday, Nov. 28 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
