Men’s Basketball Pulls Away Late To Top Elms

WESTON, Mass. – Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) equaled his season-high of 19 points, Isaiah Wilson (Cambria Heights, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and the Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team pulled away in the final minutes to top Elms College 75-62 in New England Collegiate Conference action, Saturday at Higgins Court.

With the win, the Pride improve to 6-8 and remain in the conference mix at 3-2. Elms drops to 2-11 and 2-4 in the NECC.

Julio Galay (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 12 points and dished out five assists for the Pride. Jordan Seldon (Everett, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists with Afonja also adding seven rebounds and two steals.

Symon Smith (Oklahoma City, Okla.) was a force on the offensive end for the Blazers, playing all 40 minutes and scoring a game-high 34 points on 12-19 shooting. He kept Elms in the game time and again including a key three pointer when it looked as if Regis would pull away midway through the second half.

Regis would hold the lead the entire second half but could never put Elms away. Smith's and-one play cut the lead to just 59-58 with 4:57 to play before the Pride finally grabbed a foothold of the game, responding with a 9-0 run to go up 68-58 with just under two minutes to play.

Elms led by four points midway through the first half but hot shooting by Seldon helped the Pride grab the momentum going into the break. Trailing 25-22, an Afonja layup and back-to-back Seldon three pointers gave Regis a 30-25 lead, then Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) nailed a three pointer of his own and the Pride led 33-30 at the break.

Regis returns to action Tuesday, Jan. 17 with a home game against Mitchell at 6:00 p.m. Elms hosts Newbury the same day with a 7:00 p.m. tipoff time.
