NOR'EASTERS STORM PAST REGIS IN LAST SECOND

Weston, Mass.—As time expired in the game, the University of New England’s Anthony Coleman (Austin, Texas) would bank a shot off the backboard to give the Nor’easters an 81-80 victory over its The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Regis College (8-19, 4-2 TCCC) Thursday.

Coleman contributed 13 points for UNE in his 19 minutes of play. Four players tallied double-digits for the Nor’easters including Coleman. Anthony Johnson (Austin, Texas) finished with a team-high 20 points on 8-of-17 (.470) shooting from the field.

Teammates Kadare Brown (Baton Rouge, La.) and Quentin Thompson finished with 15 and 11 points respectively.

Thompson had the games only double-double, adding 11 rebounds to his 15-point performance.

Brown was solid from the field making 5-of-8 (.625), and shooting better than 67 percent (4-of-6) from the three-point line.

Similarly, Regis’ leading scorer, Darrin Kelly (South Dennis, Mass.) had 20 points, and a game-high seven steals. Kelly’s last steal of the game set Regis up to take a one-point lead.

Senior James Cooper (Philadelphia, Pa.) rang in with 19 points in 37 minutes. Phil Alibrandi (York, Maine) and Derrick Neal added 15 and 12 points respectively for the Pride.

The Nor’easters took control of the boards, handily grabbing 40 total rebounds to Regis’ 25.

The University of New England jumped to an 11-0 lead through the first 4:30 minutes of the game before Regis marked its first basket. The Nor’easters did not relinquish its lead in the first half, but Regis did come within two points (39-37) in the last seconds of the first half.

Opening the second half down by one, 39-38, Alibrandi made his second free-throw tying the game at 39-39. Making good on a 15-foot jumper, Alibrandi gave Regis its first lead of the game at 17:47, and would maintain that lead for the next 17:00 minutes.

A three-pointer by UNE’s Brown gave the Nor’easters a one-point advantage, but a foul by Keith Beasly put Regis’ Kelly on the line to shoot two. Kelly sank his first attempt tying the game at 79-79.

His first would also drop through the net giving Regis a one-point advantage.

A heave from the baseline by Thompson landed in the hands of Coleman. With a quick step to the right, Coleman pulled up, released his shot, and as the horn buzzed to end the game, Coleman’s shot landed to end the Prides hope for a TCCC victory.

Regis will travel to Wentworth on Saturday, Jan. 30 3:00 p.m. to face its TCCC opponent. The University of New England will travel to Western New England on the same day.
