Lowe Lifts Pride Over Wheelock

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) field hockey team picked up its second win in a row on Thursday afternoon, defeating Wheelock College 1-0 in non-conference action at Regis Stadium.

With the win, the Pride records back-to-back wins this season and improves to 4-4 overall. Wheelock falls to 1-7 with the loss.

The lone marker of the afternoon came off of a penalty corner in the 18th minute. After Pride freshman Joslyn O'Brien (Petersham, Mass.) had a shot blocked by the Wheelock defense, sophomore Mary Costantino (Abington, Mass.) scooped up the rebound and fed a pass to classmate Sidney Lowe (Lancaster, Mass.). Lowe shoveled a shot into a vacated net for her first collegiate goal, putting the Pride ahead 1-0.

Wheelock got a glorious opportunity to even the score with 22:45 remaining in the second half, as the Wildcats were awarded a penalty stroke. Leading scorer Katie Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) stepped up to take the stroke, but was turned away by a sprawling save from Regis senior goalkeeper Maresa Malcolm Barrington, N.J.) to preserve her team's 1-0 lead.

The Regis defense buckled down after the scare, and Frade's penalty stroke would prove to be Wheelock final shot of the contest. The Pride outshot the Wildcats 8-0 in the game's final 22:45, and 15-7 overall.

Malcolm made three saves on the afternoon to pick up her third shutout win of the season. Wheelock's Cassidy Smith (South Berwick, Maine) was credited with the loss despite turning away six Regis shots.

Next up for the Pride, they will play on Saturday, taking on Rivier at home for Regis Fest at noon. Wheelock will be off until next Saturday when they host Bay Path to open New England Collegiate Conference play.
