WESTON, Mass. - Freshman Jamie Juskiewicz (Gorham, Maine) tallied her first collegiate goal late in the first half to propel the Regis (Mass.) field hockey team to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Western Connecticut State University on Friday afternoon at Regis Stadium.

With the win, the Pride moves to 1-0 on the season, while the Colonials drop to 0-1.

Western Connecticut State controlled much of the play in the opening half, but the Pride defense corps held firm to keep the Colonials off the board. The game appeared to be heading to the break without a score until the Pride was awarded a late penalty corner. Off the corner, Juskiewicz took a feed from senior Julie Flateau (Waltham, Mass.) and tapped it past goalkeeper Neve Manion (Newington, Conn.) at the 34:15 mark for what would prove to be the game's lone tally.

The goal gave the Pride much of the momentum as the teams returned to the field for the second half, as Regis outshot the Colonials 8-1 in the period. Western Connecticut's best chance to tie the game came with just over 17 minutes left on the clock. Colonial sophomore forward Shannon Lynch (Sandy Hook, Conn.) redirected a shoulder-high shot towards the cage that beat goalkeeper Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.), but went wide of the post.

Western Connecticut had a penalty corner with 1:18 left in the game but was unable to muster a shot, and the Pride came away victorious. The Colonials held a heavy advantage in the penalty corner count, leading the Pride 11-4, but had no shots off of any of their 11 chances. The Pride outshot the visitors 11-3 on the afternoon.

Malcolm got the win in goal from the Pride, making two saves for the shutout win. Manion took the loss with a two-save effort. Manion was relieved in the second half by sophomore Elizabeth Fagan (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.), who allowed no goals and made three saves in 35 minutes of action.

The Pride will return to the field next Tuesday as they travel to Wheaton for a 7:00 p.m. start. Western Connecticut plays its home opener on Sunday when the Colonials play host to William Paterson at 1:00 p.m.
