Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Loss To Elms, 1-0

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) field hockey team dominated play from start to finish but came up short in a 1-0 overtime loss to Elms in New England Collegiate Conference action Tuesday night at Regis Stadium.

The primetime showdown was a matchup of NECC heavyweights as both teams came in with unblemished league records. Elms would leave unscathed improving its league mark to 4-0 and overall to record to 6-6. The Pride fall to 4-1 in the NECC and 6-5 overall.

Madison Messier's (Warren, Mass.) sudden victory goal in the 79th minute was lone score and game winner. She took a pass from Stephanie Esposito (Orange, Conn.) on the right flank with her back to the goal, spun around and scored past Regis goalie Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) to shock the Pride.

Regis enjoyed a 20-8 shot advantage which included a 14-1 differential in the first half. Blazer goalie Jillian Lapponese (Enfield, Conn.) made seven saves in posting the shutout while Malcolm, who saw her action increase in the overtime period, posted three saves.

Aineen Callahan (Diamond Point, N.Y.) and Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) were the most active on attack for the Pride. Both registered four shots with Casello putting three on target. Messier and Jezzy McGuire (Branfield, Mass.) each had three shots for Elms.

Regis next hosts Mount Ida on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m. The Blazers return to action on Thursday as well, visiting Daniel Webster for a 4:00 p.m. start time.
