REGIS BLANKS WHEELOCK, 7-0

WESTON, Mass. – Seven goals from six different players fueled a 7-0 victory for the Regis College field hockey team over New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) opponent Wheelock College on Wednesday evening at Regis Stadium. The Pride earn their second consecutive shutout win and improve to 5-10 overall, 3-1 in the NECC.

Regis opened up the scoring on the night in the sixth minute of play when junior Yasmine Akib (Everett, Mass.) tipped in a ball played in by senior Stacy Burns (Waltham, Mass.) for the early 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Burns would connect with Victoria McAuley (Latham, N.Y.) off a set piece from a penalty corner. McAuley played the ball to Burns, who then found McAuley sitting at the left post for an easy tap in goal to put Regis ahead by two.

Junior Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) made it a 3-0 game at the 20:40 mark. The midfielder's shot was initially saved by goalkeeper Michelle Greene (Mansfield, Mass.), but Walls was able to knock in her own rebound.

Akib added her second goal of the game just shy of eight minutes later after McAuley fed her the ball from the right side of the field, and Burns roofed the ball top right corner on a penalty stroke in the 34th minute, as the Pride went into halftime with a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Regis continued its dominance in the second half, scoring two more goals for the 7-0 final. Freshman Sam Anderson (Sandwich, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 41st minute after Greene kicked the ball out to her stick in a failed clear attempt. Anderson took a low shot from just inside the circle for the goal.

Freshman Ashley Ryan (Mashpee, Mass.) also scored her first collegiate goal to close out the scoring on the night. In the 53rd minute, Akib dribbled up and pushed the ball over to the right post, where Ryan was waiting to bury the ball home.

Wheelock (1-11, 1-3 NECC) was led by Greene and her 21 save performance, as well as Jen Ryan (Bellingham, Mass.) and Valerie Ferrante (Milford, Mass.), who each had one defensive save on the night.

Both teams return to action on Saturday for 12 p.m. conference games. Wheelock travels to Anna Maria, while the Pride host Bay Path.
