REGIS COLLEGE HOLDS BECKER TO OVERTIME

WESTON, Mass.—Regis College (4-7) lost its seventh game of the season losing to Becker College (3-7) 2-1 Saturday during Regis’ homecoming. The Pride’s Candace Ferry (Malden, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) scored an unassisted goal against Becker’s Nakita Gosselin (Springfield, Vt./Springfield).  The goal was Ferry’s seventh score of the season. Michelle Griczika (Barre, Mass./Gardner) tied the game scoring on an assist from Jessica Provencher (Berwick, Maine/Berwick).

Both scores came in the second half of the game. Regis College head coach Lisa LeVierge asked her team to “dig deep” during a timeout taken by the Pride. The two teams were even in shots on goal (10) through 66-minutes of play.

Regis had 14 penalty corners with 2:00 minutes remaining in the game, but was only able to convert on the Ferry score. A minute remained with the scored tied 1-1 to close out regulation. A Becker foul gave Regis the needed motivation to attack, but Gosselin would post her ninth save to end regulation.

A penalty corner for Regis College at 3:32 in the first overtime was a perfect scoring opportunity, but the Becker defense would stand strong. Becker’s Victoria Sirchia (Goshen, Conn./Goshen) would later take two shots against Regis’ Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnham, Mass./Oakmont Regional). Mitchell had 16 saves for the Pride.

The two teams would continue to battle in overtime both offensively and defensively. Regis put itself in great position taking back-to-back corners. Unfortunately, the Pride could not convert the opportunities. However, Becker would also have corner opportunities. The two teams would take 19 and nine corners respectively.

Griczika, who scored Becker’s first goal, also tallied its second score of the game. Considering the sudden death rule, her score ended the game with just eight seconds remaining in overtime.
