FERRY POSTS TWO SCORES IN WIN FOR REGIS COLLEGE

WESTON, Mass.—Regis College (3-6, 1-2 TCCC) battled the rainy conditions to post a 3-1 non-conference win over Rivier College (1-5) in field hockey Tuesday. Rivier’s Kristen Tyler (Thornton, N.H./Plymouth Regional) and Regis’ Torie Pappas (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) scored the first goals for their respective programs.

In a match-up that saw its share of weathered conditions, so did both teams. Tyler’s score came just three minutes into the game, and there would not be another score posted by the Raiders. Tightening up its defense, Regis still allowed Rivier to take 16 total shots, managing 14 on goal. Tyler finished with four shots, and four shots on goal.

Tyler’s goal would beat Regis’ Morgan Mitchell (Ashburnahm, Mass./Oakmont Regional) to the right side of the keeper. Mitchell faced 14, making 12 saves for Regis College.

Erin Gatsas (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) had a team-high five shots, with an equal number being on goal. Defensively Hilary Bouchard (Wells, Maine/Wells) and Meghan Stephen (Pelham, N.H./Pelham) posted two and one defensive saves respectively.

As a team Regis College took fewer shots, but maintained a 44 percent shots on goal average. Five different Pride player’s tallied shots in the game. Candace Ferry (Malden, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) had a team-high five shots, and posted two goals in the game, including the game winner in the 60th minute.

In her nine games played, Ferry holds the top spot with six goals this season. To date this is Ferry’s second highest goals posted in a game. She had a hat trick in a 3-0 defeat of Elms College (Sept. 8).

The Rivier defense held Regis College from attempting many shots on Nicole Hauswirth (Cranston, R.I./Cranston East), the Raiders keeper, for more than 29-minutes. Hauswirth had three saves in her 70 minutes of play.

Not letting the elements alter its play, Regis’ Pappas held firm within the Raider’s scoring area until the ball played to her stick. Playing a pass from teammate Stacy Burns (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), Pappas turned her shot into the Pride’s first score of the game with just 1:30 remaining in the first half. The score marks Pappas’ third of the season.

With the game knotted 1-1 for 28 minutes, the attacking Ferry took a pass from Meghan Robohm (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) towards Hauswirth. Ferry pulled back her stick and struck the ball into the upper left corner of the net to give Regis a 2-1 lead at 60:33.

Considering the one goal lead, Ferry’s next goal came on an open-field dribble towards the Raider keeper, just beating Hauswirth with a shot to the right side.

The respective programs will take to the field on September 30. Rivier College will travel to Daniel Webster, while Regis College will host Wheelock. The games are scheduled for 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm respectively.
