Pride Student-Athletes Honored with GNAC Weekly Awards

WINTHROP, Mass. - After a successful weekend across several sports, four Regis College student-athletes received weekly award from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), announced Monday afternoon, Dec. 5, by the league office.

Anastazia Copeland (West Hartford, Conn.) received Female Field Athlete of the Week honors after finishing first in the weight throw at the Suffolk Relays held Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center. On her first throw of the season, she posted a mark of 12.74 meters (41' 9.75"), over three-and-a-half meters further than her previous collegiate best mark. Copeland won the event by over two feet, defeating competitors from Division I programs Merrimack and Stonehill as well as top Division III teams Brandeis, Roger Williams, and Suffolk.

Ryan Kim (Los Angeles, Calif.) earned Male Swim & Dive Rookie of the Week honors after first breaking a 13-year-old Regis Pool record in the 200 breaststroke Friday night with a time of 2:15.93, almost one full second faster than the previous mark. Later that night, he led off the 800 freestyle relay that also set a Regis Pool record with an overall time of 7:47.30, over 20 seconds faster than the previous standard. Saturday at the Bridgewater State Invitational, Kim won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:16.70, plus he finished second in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.70) and third in the 50 breaststroke (29.45).

Justin Thuotte (Lebanon, Conn.) started his collegiate career with strong performances in several events at the Suffolk Relays, earning Male Field Athlete of the Week and Male Track & Field Rookie of the Week recognition. He finished second in the triple jump with a top mark of 12.69 meters (41' 7.75") accomplished on his final attempt. Thuotte also finished 10th in the high jump by clearing 1.75 meters (5' 8.75") and tied for 11th in the long jump with a mark of 6.14 meters (20' 1.75"). He also posted a time of 7.60 seconds in the 60 meter dash.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) collected Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week accolades after helping Regis defeat Elms Saturday in the GNAC opener for both teams. She shot 8-for-13 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free throw line for a season-high 18 points. Zancan also pulled down seven rebounds and collected three blocked shots, also a season high total for the first-year forward. Zancan has scored at least eight points in all five Pride games so far this season, averaging 12.0 points per game on 59.5 percent field goal shooting, currently second in the GNAC.

The Regis women's basketball team enters a busy week with three games, starting Monday night, Dec. 5, against WPI beginning at 7 p.m. at Higgins Court. The Pride swimming and diving and track and field teams will return to competition Saturday, Jan. 7.
