Three Members of Pride Receive GNAC Honors in Opening Week of Season

WINTHROP, Mass. – The Regis College athletics department opened the 2022-23 season with several outstanding performances, as three members of the Pride received weekly honors from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), announced late Tuesday afternoon by the league office.

For the fifth time in the span of a calendar year, Ashleigh Kelley (Stoneham, Mass.) has been named the GNAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week. After preserving Regis' 1-0 shutout victory at Curry Saturday, first-year goalie Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) has been named the GNAC Women's Soccer Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Week. Kiana Thompson (Boynton Beach, Fla.) received GNAC Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week honors after helping the Pride defeat Bridgewater State last Friday.

Kelley went out with the leaders at the Wellesley Invitational last Friday and stayed close to them throughout the five-kilometer race. She eventually crossed the finish line in eighth place with a time of 19:30.7, first among Regis competitors for the eighth consecutive meet and ninth time overall in her collegiate career. Kelley, a graduate student in her final year of eligibility, is pursuing her master's degree in occupational therapy.

In her first career collegiate competition, Mazo entered Saturday's match against Curry at the start of the second half and kept the Colonels off the scoreboard to help the Pride earn a 1-0 victory. Mazo made eight saves in the final 45 minutes of the match, including two key saves in the last seven minutes of regulation after Regis took the lead. Mazo is majoring in psychology at Regis.

Also competing for the first time at the collegiate level, Thompson led the Pride to a 7-2 road victory at Bridgewater State last Friday. She teamed with Samantha Gevry at number one doubles for a convincing 8-1 victory to score Regis' first point of the match. She then cruised to a straight-set victory at number one singles (6-0, 6-1) as the Pride won five of six singles matches over the Bears. Thompson is majoring in business management.

Regis College sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports within NCAA Division III as part of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
