Seven Pride Teams Vying For GNAC Postseason Play

Seven Pride Teams Vying For GNAC Postseason Play

2017-18 has marked the first season of Regis Athletics in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, and now with the fall league season approaching the finish line each Regis fall sport is vying for a spot in their respective GNAC postseason tournament. With less that two weeks to go and only a handful of conference contests remaining, here’s a glimpse at each team’s postseason outlook.

Women’s Volleyball

Tournament format: 8 of 13 teams qualify for the single elimination tournament which begins Tuesday, Oct. 31. The top four seeds will host each quarterfinal with the highest remaining seeds serving as the host for the semifinals and final.
Current record: 5-2 GNAC, 9-12 overall
Current place: 3rd
Where Regis stands: After a 2-1 week which included a trimatch sweep on Saturday, Regis sits at third which would give it a host match to open the conference tournament. There is much work to be done, however, as the Pride has five matches remaining on it’s 12-match league schedule, all away from home. The race is tight with Regis holding only a two-game lead over Mount Ida and Lasell who are tied for the eighth and final tournament spot.

Women’s Tennis

Tournament format: 6 of 7 teams qualify for the single elimination tournament which begins Wednesday, Oct. 18. The top two seeds earn first-round byes with the bottom four teams competing in the first round with the higher seeds hosting. The winners advance to play the top two seeds in the semifinals. The semifinals and final will be held at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center.
Current record: 4-1 GNAC, 5-2 overall
Current place: 2nd
Where Regis stands: With just one league match to play, the Pride sit at No. 2  in the standings which would give them the coveted first-round bye. Regis will likely need a win in that final match (at Albertus Magnus, 10/14) as Suffolk is just a half game back with two matches to play. Fortunately for the Pride, a 5-4 win over the Rams last month gave them the head-to-head tiebreaker. Regis still has a shot at the top seed but will need to beat Albertus Magnus and have Johnson & Wales (RI) lose its final two matches.

Men’s Soccer

Tournament format: 8 of 11 teams qualify for the single elimination tournament which begins Sunday, Oct. 29. The top four seeds will host each quarterfinal with the highest remaining seeds serving as the host for the semifinals and final.
Current record: 4-3 GNAC, 7-5 overall
Current place: T-4th
Where Regis stands: The Pride had a hot start to the season but have dropped its previous two games. St. Joseph’s (Me.) is clearly out in front for the tournament’s No. 1 seed and with three league games to play, all at home, Regis is only three points behind second-place Mount Ida

Women’s Soccer

Tournament format: 8 of 13 teams qualify for the single elimination tournament which begins Saturday, Oct. 28. The top four seeds will host each quarterfinal with the highest remaining seeds serving as the host for the semifinals and final.
Current record: 1-6-1 GNAC, 2-7-1
Current place: 10th
Where Regis stands: The Pride have some work to do to qualify for the GNAC tournament. With three games to play they are five points behind both Mount Ida and Suffolk who are battling for the eighth and final postseason bid. The Pride will likely need wins in its final three games for a shot at cracking the top 8. Unfortunately, Regis will not be able make up ground with head-to-head matchups having already played the Mustangs and Rams earlier in the season.

Field Hockey

Tournament format: 6 of 8 teams qualify for the single elimination tournament which begins Saturday, Oct. 28. The top two seeds earn first-round byes with the bottom four teams competing in the first round with the higher seeds hosting. The winners advance to play the top two seeds in the semifinals. The semifinals and final will be held at the highest seed remaining
Current record: 2-3 GNAC, 7-4 overall
Current place: T-4th
Where Regis stands: The Pride notched a critical win this past week over Johnson & Wales (RI), a result that was the difference between tied for fourth or tied for sixth. Regis has two games remaining on its conference schedule beginning with league leader Lasell. The finale should prove to have huge ramifications as the Pride Mount Ida whom it is currently tied with. One win in its final two games should be enough to book a trip to the conference tournament.

Cross Country

Tournament format: The GNAC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championship will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I. Johnson & Wales (RI) will serve as this year’s host. The women’s event will be a 5K competition with a 1:00 p.m. start time. The men’s 8K will follow at 2:00 p.m.
