WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) field hockey, women's volleyball and men's and women's cross country and soccer teams all held their first practices of the 2017 season on Monday afternoon at the Regis Athletic Complex.

The men's soccer team was the first team to open practice on the day, getting some light ball control drills in before holding a half-field scrimmage. "The kids did well," said head coach Renato Capobianco. "We don't want to over-do anything. I just want to see what the freshmen look like - the new players with the returning players - and just get them loose because tomorrow a lot of the more physical stuff begins."

The women's volleyball team ran what head coach Marc Turiano called a "full-scale" fitness test to prepare his team for the season. "The team was extremely focused today," he said. "They're excited to be back on campus and we're ready to get their first touches on the ball tomorrow."

The men's and women's cross country teams opened up their first practice with a light workout as well on Monday. The team did a light run at the nearby Weston Reservoir before returning to campus to run some sprints and jogging at Regis Stadium. "Overall the practice went well," said head coach Kourtney Bonsey. "We just went on what we call an 'easy running day.'"

The women's soccer team focused its attention on ball skills, as head coach Mike Webber used nearly the first hour of the two-hour session working with his team on ball handling. The training session concluded with the team breaking up into groups and taking part in skill drills.

The field hockey team was the final team to open up its first practice on Monday. The team ran a fitness test to open the training session before moving on to stick handling and passing drills. The practice concluded with a scrimmage. "I think (the first practice) went well," said head coach Nikki Panciocco. "Everyone came back in shape so now it's just working on the stick skills, getting back into gameplay and working together as a team. We're looking forward to our double session again tomorrow."

The men's and women's tennis teams, with an extra week until their first matches, will be the seventh and eighth teams to open their fall training camps when they open practice on Saturday.

Each team that opened camp today opens its season next weekend, starting with the field hockey team taking on Western Connecticut State at Regis Stadium on Friday, September 1. The cross country teams each compete at Wellesley College the same day, as well as the women's volleyball team opening play with a doubleheader in Belton, Texas. The men's and women's soccer teams each open on Saturday, September 2. The women are at home to take on Me.-Farmington at 3:30 p.m., while the men travel to Eastern Nazarene for a 7:00 p.m. kick off.
