Men’s Volleyball Drops Midweek Non-League Tilt

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Regis College men's volleyball team lost to the Sage Colleges Wednesday night, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-22), in a non-conference contest at Kahl Gym.

Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) once again led the Pride offensively with 12 kills, while Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.) finished with six kills. Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) dished out 15 assists, and libero Zabdiel Frias (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) paced the Regis defense with seven digs to go along with a kill and two assists.

Sage (4-11) scored the first five points of the match, including two service aces from Scott Sanders, but four kills from Alves helped Regis put together a 7-2 run to tie the opening set at 7-7. The Gators scored four unanswered points, featuring a solo block and a kill by Sanders, to retake the lead at 11-7, but the Pride again came back, going on a 7-3 scoring stretch to pull ahead, 19-18.

The Gators would close out the first set with their own 7-3 scoring run, capped by two kills from Shane Wenz. Sage used that momentum to open an 11-2 advantage to start the second set, led by three kills from Jarod Martel. Down 23-11 after a kill by Sanders, the Pride rattled off five straight points, including consecutive kills by Alves, but a kill by Sanders followed by a block from Sanders and Ryan Jennings clinched the second set for Sage.

Regis opened the third set by taking a 7-3 lead, ending the run with a service ace from Jack Wizboski (Townsend, Mass.) and a kill by Fernando Gomez (San Juan, Puerto Rico). After a service ace by Dimitri Stewart (Paterson, N.J.) gave the Pride an 11-6 advantage, the Gators scored the next four points to close to within one point.

Another Wizboski service ace increased the Regis lead back to three at 16-13, but Sage would put together a 7-2 scoring run, led by two kills from Martel. The Pride closed to within one on kills by Alves and Stewart, but Sage closed out the set and the match thanks to kills by Wenz and Martel as well as a service ace from Jennings.

Wenz led Sage with 13 kills, while Martel collected 10 kills and six digs. Sanders finished with seven kills, five service aces, and four total blocks, Jennings accumulated 27 assists, two service aces, and three block assists, and Deshawn Fleary paced the Gators with 11 defensive digs.

Regis (3-10) hosts Eastern Nazarene Saturday, Feb. 22, starting at 12 p.m. in a rematch of a five-set thriller won by the Lions Jan. 30.
