Women’s Volleyball Swept At No.16 Johnson & Wales (RI)

PROVIDENCE, R.I.Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) had a team-high eight kills but it came in a losing effort as the Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team fell in three sets (25-15, 25-11, 25-14) to No. 16 Johnson & Wales (RI) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

Meg Adams (Ware, Mass.) added a team-best seven digs for Regis (9-13, 5-3 GNAC) who continues to jockey for position in the league standings heading into the GNAC Tournament later this month.

Johnson & Wales (20-0, 9-0 GNAC) had a 42-23 advantage in digs plus five blocks, which held Regis to a .051 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) just missed out on a double-double with nine kills and nine digs. Fellow outside Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) followed with eight kills and eight blocks.

Johnson & Wales found itself down 11-8 in the first set with nine of the 11 Regis points coming off JWU errors. The Wildcats righted the ship and went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-11 lead on an Elyssa Nicolas (Brisbane, Calif.) ace. A block by Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) and MacKenzie Emco (Sutton, Mass.) pulled the Pride within 17-14, but the Wildcats finished the set on an 8-1 run.

Game two saw the Wildcats firing on all cylinders as they hit .579 on their way to a .383 rate for the match. Middle blocker Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif.), who leads the country in hitting, had a match-high 11 kills while hitting .917.

The Pride held an 11-8 lead in set three before a 7-0 run from the Wildcats did Regis in. Coniglio had three kills in the run and JWU coasted to the win to complete the sweep.

The Pride will have a week off before continuing conference play Wednesday, Oct. 18 at Suffolk.
