Women's Volleyball Returns to Winning Ways, Tops NEC In Four Sets

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team got back on the winning track tonight, overcoming a second-set hiccup to top New England College in four sets, Wednesday at Higgins Court. Set scores were 25-13, 22-25, 25-18, 25-10.

Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) again delivered for the Pride (4-9), drilling 11 kills while tallying six digs and hitting at a solid .318 clip.

Dreka Griffin (Calera, Ala.) led the Pilgrim attack with nine kills while Gabryella Serrano (Bridgewater, Mass.) led her team with nine digs.

Set one saw the Pride jump out to an early 6-1 lead en route to the quick win. NEC hung around but Regis continued to lead and after a block and a kill from Veasey the Pride had extended its advantage to 18-11. The run continued as Sydney Trusty (7 kills, 11 digs) drilled back-to-back kills to seal the win.

Veasey got off to a hot start with three early kills in set two, but a Kaitlyn Walker (Cottonwood, Calif.) kill coupled by several Pride miscues helped NEC (5-8) to an 8-7 lead. Regis would start to take control, however, when consecutive Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) kills gave her team a 16-12 lead. Haley Schulte (Fullerton, Calif.) and Nicole Connolly (San Mateo, Calif.) both added kills to extend the lead to 19-13 but NEC would not go away. Kills from Angela Davis (Springfield, Mass.) and Jada Small (Coconut Creek, Fla.) helped the Pilgrims reel off seven straight points to take a 23-20 lead and hold on for the match-tying win.

Set three saw Regis break away midway through the set. Neither team would hit a good percentage but the Pride dominated at the net to help themselves to the win. Veasey's kill lifted Regis to a 19-12 lead, one that the Pride would not let slip away. Trusty and MacKenzie Emco (Sutton, Mass.) recorded kills down the stretch and both got in on a block to end matters.

The set two loss proved to be just a hiccup as Regis cruised to a 25-10 set four win to notch the victory.

Regis returns to action this Saturday for a pair of GNAC matches at Higgins Court. The Pride faces Albertus Magnus at 12:00 p.m. then take on Simmons at 4:00 p.m. to close out the day. The Pilgrims next visit Mount Ida Friday at 4:00 p.m.
