Veasey Goes For Season High, Women’s Volleyball Earns Tri-Match Split

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team hosted its first tri-match of the season, sweeping Saint Joseph's (Me.) in its GNAC opener 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 but had the tables turned against Amherst in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-13 loss to the Mammoths.

Regis (3-8, 1-0 GNAC) next visits Brandeis Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Both Saint Joseph's (5-6, 0-1 GNAC) and Amherst (5-3) are back in action that day as well. The Monks host Colby at 7:00 p.m. with Amherst visiting Westfield State also for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.

Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) poured in a season-high 16 kills in what proved to be an impressive showing in the Pride's first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference match. Veasey was the focal point of the offense in the morning match, committing just five errors on 41 swings for a .268 hitting percentage.

Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) added seven kills of her own and shared match-high honors with Madison Provencher (Rochester, N.H.) with 12 digs.

Set one saw Regis open up an early lead and never look back. Three early kills from Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) lifted the Pride to a 7-2 lead which later swelled to 15-6 after back-to-back Veasey kills.

Sophia Randall (Epping, N.H.) would later win four straight points off her serve, then join in on a rare triple block with Sarah Dyer (Seabrook, N.H.) and Erin Olsen (Stoughton, Mass.) to put a dent into the lead for the Monks at 18-13. Down the stretch though it was the Pride who scored the final four points of the set to secure the win.

Regis took a one-point lead midway through set two to race away with the win. After an Olsen kill cut the Pride lead to 14-13, a pair of Veasey kills spearheaded a 6-0 run to put the set out of reach. A pair of Trusty kills down the stretch sealed the win and gave the Pride the commanding two-set lead.

The third and what proved to be the final set featured another dominant Regis performance. Shay Faber's (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) ace capped an early 7-1 run and the Pride never looked back in completing the sweep.

Amherst 3 Regis 0

Regis had hoped to continue its momentum into the Amherst match, but the Mammoths swept the Pride as they had just last season in Amherst. Sydney Trusty had a solid performance, nearly getting a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs while hitting at an impressive .455 clip. Katryna Veasey posted eight kills and nine digs with Shay Faber adding 13 assists and nine digs.

Emily Kolsky (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) delivered a match-high 12 kills for Amherst with Hayes Honea (Redondo Beach, Calif.) adding 15 digs, also a match high.

Regis quickly found itself staring at an uphill climb in set one. Back-to-back Kolsky kills kickstarted a 9-1 start for the Mammoths who held the Pride at bay for the remainder of the set. Regis battled back into striking distance as Trusty's ace shaved the lead to 15-12, but five straight Amherst points all but put the set to bed.

Set two was the one that got away for the Pride. Both teams rarely led by more than a point before a Haley Schulte (Fullerton, Calif.) ace gave Regis a 20-18 lead. That would be where the wheels would fall off however as seven of the final nine points went to Amherst. The Pride called a timeout after four straight points put them down 22-20, and later cut the lead to one point but were never able to recover.

Amherst was able to nail down the sweep with a quick set three. Annika Reczek (Miami, Fla.) had three early kills to give the Mammoths an quick 10-4 lead, one that continued to swell before blocks from Cameron Hendricks (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Asha Walker (Los Angeles, Calif.) on match point sealed the win.
