TRACK AND FIELD SEASON PREVIEW

TRACK AND FIELD SEASON PREVIEW

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College men's and women's Track and Field Teams will open their indoor season on December 1st at the UMass Boston Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Mass. Newcomers and season veterans alike will be in action in an assortment of disciplines.

On the men's side, 400 meter runner and top performer Jeremy Israel (Boston, Mass.) hopes to start off strong and build off of his All-New England performance from a year ago. Returner Chandler Davies (Hartford, Conn.) as well as newcomers Joe Greco (Oxford, Conn.) and Ray Grasso will team up with Israel for the 4x400 meter relay.

The shorter sprints consist of a similar mix of talent and potential. Sophomores Carlos Romer (Boston, Mass.) and Alex Tran (Lawrence, Mass.) will lead a young group of newcomers, some of whom have never competed in track and field before. Freshman Donaldo Joseph comes in with track experience, while Matthew Owens (Boston, Mass.) is a former football player and Kevin Lara spent his high school years on the baseball diamond. The two newcomers have yet to run a race in their track careers, but they have begun to show the speed that gave them success in their other sports during practice.

Coming off of successful distance running campaigns with the club cross country team, Jonathan Paul (Medford, Mass.) and Owen McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) are joined by Izzy Labrador (West Haven, Conn.), who is looking to move up in distance. Their focus during the indoor season will be the events ranging from one mile to 5000 meters.

As far as field events, throwers Paul Gianfroddo (Burlington, Conn.) and Mike Barsomian look to translate great gains in strength and technique into feet and inches in the shot put circle. Completing the team is Josh Saari (Westborough, Mass.), who competes in the pole vault and is hoping to start the season off on the right foot.

The women's team is laden with upperclassmen leadership. Senior Anyah Hernandez (Brookline, Mass.) is entering her final season of sprinting and will be looking to end her career by putting up some of her best times ever. Her sprinting partner is Santi Strickland (Holbrook, Mass.), a freshman who shows great promise.

Similar to McQuaid, Paul, and Labrador, junior Sarah Schow (Northborough, Mass.) will compete in distance events, including the one mile, 3000 meter, and 5000 meter races.

Rounding out the team is pole vaulter Tori Rapsis (Nashua, N.H.). The last two years she has been able jump her way into the DIII New England Championships, and with personal bests as her goals, she does not intend for this season to be any different.

Saturday's meet begins at 9:30AM and the full schedule can be found by clicking here.
