Defending NECC Champion Pride Open Title Defense with Victory

WESTON, Mass. - The four-time defending New England Collegiate Conference champion Regis (Mass.) women's tennis team started off their 2016 conference schedule in style on Saturday afternoon, downing Becker College by a score of 8-1.

With the win, the Pride improve to 3-1 (1-0 NECC) on the season, while Becker falls to 2-2 (1-1 NECC).

The Pride got off to a strong start in doubles, picking up all three wins. At first doubles, the duo of Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) and Carly Scanlon (Canton, Mass.) from Regis defeated Becker's Jennifer Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Jacqueline Andrade (Somerset, Mass.) by a score of 8-3. The Pride's Amy DiPace (Cambridge, Mass.) and Emily Rice (Pittsfield, Mass.) took care of business in second doubles, topping Jessica Leger (Auburn, Mass.) and Dana Mahan (Manville, R.I.) 8-1. The Pride won third doubles, as well as sixth singles, by forfeit.

The Pride continued to cruise once singles play got under way, winning five of the six matches. At first singles, senior Erica Murphy (Portsmouth, N.H.) rallied to top Jennifer Lord in three sets, 6-7, 6-1, 10-5. Lord's sister, the Pride's Jessie Lord (Fall River, Mass.) got the best of Andrade at second singles, winning 6-2, 6-1.

Regis freshman Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) continued her strong rookie campaign at third singles, as she bested Leger by a score of 6-2, 6-0. At fourth singles, Sara Kanarkiewicz (Peabody, Mass.) took care of business against Mahan, winning 6-1, 6-1.

Becker sophomore Emily Wodell (Feeding Hills, Mass.) picked up the Hawks' lone victory of the day at fifth singles, as she defeated the Pride's Kailey Myers (Norwalk, Calif.) 6-4, 6-2.

Next on the docket for the Pride is a Wednesday afternoon showdown at Bay Path at 3:30 p.m. Becker returns to the court for a non-conference matchup with Anna Maria on Monday night.
