Women Sweep, Men Second at Bridgewater State Tri-Meet

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's swimming and diving team came out on top of Saturday's tri-meet against Bridgewater State University and Husson University, beating both squads at BSU's Dr. Mary Jo Moriarty Pool. The men's team was able to prevail over Husson, but fell short against the hosts.

On the women's side, five different Pride swimmers won events on the afternoon, with senior co-captain Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) winning three events (1000yd freestyle, 100yd butterfly and 500yd freestyle) and freshmen Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.) and Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) each winning a pair of events. Junior Ashlyn DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) won the 100yd freestyle and sophomore Amanda Graf (Newton, Mass.) won the 200yd freestyle to round out the Pride's nine swimming victories on the afternoon. Freshman diver Elisabeth McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) continued her impressive rookie campaign as well on Saturday, winning both the 1m and 3m diving events with scores of 191.50 and 203.10 respectively.

The men started off their day on a high note, winning their first event of the day, the 200yd freestyle relay, with a time of 1:39.60. The relay team consisted of seniors Kiet Luong (Malden, Mass.), Bryan Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) and Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Mass.) and junior Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.), and beat the Bridgewater State "A" team by just .15 seconds. The day was just getting started for Bastianelli and Luong though, as each went on to win three events each on the afternoon.

Both the men's and women's swimming & diving teams will be back in action starting on Feb. 16 when the teams compete in the four-day New England Championships taking place at the University of Rhode Island.
