Pride Swimming and Diving Race Past Elms College

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their first home event of the new year, dominating Elms in both the men's and women's team competitions Saturday at Regis Pool. The men's team won 139-97 with the Pride women topping the Blazers 163-85.

The dual meet was also senior day for Brittany Burke (Bourne, Mass.), Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Mass.), Robert Ekberg (Northbridge, Mass.), Bryan Johnson (Sudbury, Mass.) and Kiet Luong (Malden, Mass.) who were honored with a special ceremony prior to the first race.

Sarah Leonard (Brockton, Mass.) took top honors in three races, winning both the 100 free (58.21) and the 200 free (2:12.58) nearly six seconds ahead Elms swimmer Aislinn Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.). She also opened the day winning the 200 medley relay with teammates Katherine Mariano (Newton, Mass.), Ashlyn DeRoche (North Reading, Mass.) and Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.).

Jessica Higgins (Peabody, Mass.) and Gloria Sutton (Suffield, Conn.) placed first in a pair of events as well. Higgins won the 200 back (2:19.53) and 100 fly (1:04.42) with Sutton taking top honors in the 500 free (5:44.15) and 1650 free (19:25.98). Elisabeth McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) participated unopposed in the 1-meter diving events.

Elms impressed in the women's 100 yard IM with Natalie Obando (Chicopee, Mass.), Kelly O'Connell (Monson, Mass.) and Becca Carterud (South Windsor, Conn.) taking the top three spots.

Luong won four events on the men's side to pace the Pride. He won the 200 medley relay (1:47.34) with teammates Johnson, Ekberg and Nick Rainville (Reading, Mass.), the 100 fly (53.08), the 50 fly (25.43) and 100 back (59.74). Bastianelli won the 1650 free (17.54.15), 100 free (50.47) and 50 free (22.79).

Elms swept both 200 yard freestyle races.

The Pride hit the water again next Saturday, Jan. 28 visiting Bridgewater State in a tri-match with Husson. Elms hosts the University of New England one week from today as well.
