Women's Soccer Plays St. Joseph's (Me.) To 1-1 Draw

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-4-1, 2-3-1 GNAC) and Regis (Mass.) (2-4-1, 2-3-1 GNAC) dueled to a 1-1 double-overtime stalemate in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday night.

Both goals were scored in the first half, as sophomore Jade Jordan (Baldwin, Maine) found the back of the net with a terrific shot, taken from 30 yards out, to the upper left 90 off a Brenna Smith (Maynard, Mass.) feed in the 38th minute. The Pride answered four minutes later when a defensive lapse allowed freshman Brianna Gaynor (Peabody, Mass.) to break free on a 1v1 with a shot to the bottom left corner of the net. Sophomore Natalie Hill (Houlton, Maine) was credited with an assist on the play.

In overtime, the Monks outshot the Pride by an 8-1 margin and had a handful of great scoring chances, but could not land the winning goal.

Saint Joseph's senior Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made a pair of saves in the stalemate while her counterpart, Regis (Mass.) freshman Krysten Drake (Loganville, Ga.), registered 13 stops, including several acrobatic denials. The Pride also received a game-saving defensive stop from freshman Ciara Viscione (Quincy, Mass.), who blocked a shot – in front of a wide open net - taken by senior Lauren Stiles (Gorham, Maine) in the 105th minute.

Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in shots (24-8), shots on goal (15-3), and corner kicks (4-1) on the evening.

Tonight's meeting between Saint Joseph's and Regis (Mass.) goes down as the first between the institutions' respective soccer programs. A former member of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), the Pride became full members of the GNAC this fall.

Regis next hosts Lasell this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Saint Joseph's will host University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) Saturday in a GNAC contest starting at 2:00 p.m.
