WATERVILLE, ME. – A late comeback by the Regis College women's lacrosse team fell short, as the Pride dropped a non-conference contest on the road to Thomas (Me.), 16-12. Thomas improves to 5-3 on the season, while Regis drops to 5-4.
The Terriers started the game with five unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of action to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. The run of goals saw four Thomas players get involved in the scoring, led by junior Miranda Tinsman's (Belgrade, Maine) two goals.
The Pride would get on the board at the 20:56 mark on a goal scored by junior Lindsey Graver (Bellingham, Mass.). Both teams would go back and forth trading goals up until the final 25 seconds of the first half, when freshman Erin Nelligan (Walpole, Mass.) would net back-to-back goals to put Thomas up 10-5 at the break.
The second half scoring got started when sophomore Jennifer Day (Gardiner, Maine) would score the first of her three second-half goals as she took a pass from senior Ceara DiBiase (Westbrook, Maine) and snuck it past Pride goalie Emma Decker (Southborough, Mass.) for the goal.
With the score at 12-6 in favor of Thomas, Regis would go on to score four unanswered goals to pull within two, which prompted a timeout for the hosts. Two of the goals during that stretch were scored by sophomore Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.).
The Terriers were able to regroup during the timeout, and would go on to connect on three goals over the next seven minutes to extend their lead back up to 15-10.
Regis would respond and cut the deficit to three with 4:57 remaining, but some strong Terrier defense would keep them scoreless the remainder of the way. Day would put it away with a late goal to finish with game-high five goals.
Samantha Salamone (Milford, Mass.) had a team-high three goals along with six groundballs for Regis. Walls and Graver each had two goals and two assists for the Pride.
Tinsman finished with four goals and one assist, while Nelligan had three goals and seven groundballs to lead the Terriers.
Thomas keeper Brittany Fox (Lovell, Maine) recorded six saves on 18 shots. Decker had six saves on 22 shots in the loss for Regis.
The Pride will stay on the road, as they next travel to St. Joseph's (Me.) on Thursday, April 4 for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game.
