WESTON, Mass. – Sophomore attacker Grace Politis (Billerica, Mass.) scored four goals, eclipsing the 100 point mark for her career, as the Regis College women's lacrosse team recorded a decisive 19-3 victory over visiting Green Mountain College on Saturday afternoon. Seven other players also scored goals for the Pride on the day, led by freshman midfielder Samantha Salamone's (Milford, Mass.) five goal performance.
With the win, the Pride improve to 2-2 on the year, while Green Mountain falls to 0-2 on the young season with the loss.
The Eagles wasted little time off the opening whistle, as Johanna Douglas (Essex, Conn.) won the draw control, ran down the field and scored just 13 seconds into the contest for the early 1-0 lead. The Pride would respond just 16 seconds later, however, to even things up.
Sashae Walls (Everett, Mass.) received a pass in front from Salamone, then picked up the ball and took a low shot that beat goalkeeper Virginia Anderson (Silver Spring, Md.) to knot things at 1-1. Walls struck again less than two minutes later to put Regis up, 2-1. After a Green Mountain foul, the sophomore midfielder ran 50 yards down the field for the score.
After a slight lull in scoring, the Eagles got back on the scoreboard again at the 22:58 mark after another draw control win from Douglas. Douglas, who finished with a game-high 11 draw controls, carried the ball and knifed through several Pride defenders, finishing with a goal to even things up, 2-2.
That would be as close as Green Mountain would get, as the Crimson & Gold went on a tear, scoring ten unanswered goals to close out the first half for the 12-2 lead.
Regis got goals from Salamone, Stacy Burns (Waltham, Mass.), Walls, and Lindsey Graver (Bellingham, Mass.) during that stretch, as well as three from Politis to put her over 100 career points. It was the sophomore's second goal that helped her reach the milestone, in a play that saw her run from 40 yards out and take a low shot for the score.
Coming out of the break, Douglas notched a free position goal for her third and final score of the day to make the score 12-3. But once again, the Pride responded with an impressive 7-0 run to close out the game. Andrea Barbosa (Taunton, Mass.) scored two goals and added an assist during that run, while Katie Haidemenos (Warwick, R.I.), Mary Roma (Portland, Maine), Graver, Politis, and Salamone each tacked on a goal of their own.
Salamone and Graver led the Pride with two assists apiece for Regis, while Politis, Salamone, and Kristen Amicangioli (Belmont, Mass.) all scooped up five ground balls for the Pride on the day.
The Eagles were led by Douglas' three goals, 11 draw controls, and six ground balls, while Bryanna Astor (Milltown, N.J.) pitched in with six ground balls herself. Anderson finished with ten saves in the losing effort for Green Mountain.
Regis will look to carry their momentum into tomorrow afternoon, as they host Maine-Farmington at 1:00 p.m. for a non-conference game. The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday, March 24th as they host Dallas at 11:00 a.m.
