Softball Starts Season in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Regis College softball team started its season Sunday afternoon with losses to St. Vincent and John Carroll.

St. Vincent 13, Regis 0 (5 Innings)

Three members of the Pride would record hits on the day with Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) and Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) earning singles and Erin Murphy (Bedford, N.H.) picking up a double during a loss to St. Vincent.

In the first inning, Kelsey Tobin got St. Vincent on the board first by bringing in Shae Robson from second base with a double to left-center field, kicking off a five-run inning for the Bearcats.  Another four runs in the second inning brought the Bearcat lead to nine going into the third.

In the top of the third, with Tobin on third after a Riley Assalone double to left center, Abbey Ginter grounded out to second, but the ball was hit well enough for Tobin to score and allowed Assalone to advance to third.  A single by Johnna Karas and a Mary Maceda double would put the Bearcats up 12-0. St. Vincent would add another run in the top of the fourth.

The Bearcats would finish the day 1-1 after their meeting with the Pride.

John Carroll 9, Regis 1 (5 Innings)

Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) would bring in the Pride's only run of the game with a groundball through the gap between the first and second basemen to score Emma Kelly (Lynnfield, Mass.) from second in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to take down John Carroll.

The Pride would leave two on base in the top of the first.  John Carroll would come up to bat in the bottom of the inning and score a pair of runs.

John Carroll would add to their lead with a run in both the second and third innings. In the fourth the Blue Streaks would score after Lindsay McKnight singled to left, bringing in two runs, and Quinn Sobieszcz singled to right field to extend the lead to seven.

John Carroll would wrap the day with a 2-0 record.  The Pride play again tomorrow Monday, Mar. 4, starting at 11:15 a.m. against York (Pa.), followed by a 1:30 p.m. game against Alverno.
