WESTON, Mass. - The bats exploded for the Regis (Mass.) softball team on Saturday evening, as the Pride swept Anna Maria in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Regis Field. The Pride won game one 11-0 and game two 16-1, both games in five innings.
With the sweep, the Pride improves to 7-15 overall on the season and 3-11 in the GNAC. Anna Maria falls to 2-28 on the year and 0-18 in the conference.
Regis pitcher Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) was stellar in the circle in game one, as the junior went the distance allowing just two hits to pick up her first win of the season. Petillo fanned five on her way to improving to 1-2 on the season. Petillo and freshman Alyssa Rossillo (Sudbury, Mass.) each had two hits, an RBI, and a run scored to lead the Pride offensively.
For Anna Maria, senior Amanda Lemire (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Cam Johnson (Worcester, Mass.) had the two hits. Lemire had a double and a stolen base in the losing effort, while senior Kathryn Rendock (Windsor, Conn.) got the loss on the rubber.
The bats didn't slow down in the start of game two, helping the pride secure the sweep.
Anna Maria got on the board early, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Three of the first four AMCat batters reached on singles, and sophomore Lauren Lapierre (Worcester, Mass.) opened the scoring by trotting home on a wild pitch.
The Pride would have no problem getting the run back in the bottom of the inning, going off for eight runs in the first inning. Regis would score three runs in the second and third innings and two in the fourth to complete the victory.
A handful of players had big games for the Pride in the game two win, led by Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.), who went 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored, and two RBIs. Senior Alexa Nejaime (Sandisfield, Mass.) also had an impressive stat line in the night cap, going 2-for-2 with a pair of three-baggers as well as three runs and three RBIs.
The three hits that Rossillo, the game two starter for the Pride, conceded in the top of the first were the only three hits she conceded in the entire contest. She retired the final 13 batters she faced en route to her first collegiate win, striking out a pair of AMCats.
Next up for Regis, the Pride will travel north to Saint Joseph's (Me.) for a doubleheader Sunday against the Monks. Anna Maria will take on Emmanuel on Sunday when it returns to action.
