LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - After picking up a 10-6 extra inning win over Sage earlier in the day, the Regis (Mass.) softball team completed the sweep Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over Medaille at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
With the win, the Pride improves to 3-3 on the season, while Medaille drops to 5-3. The sweep marked the first time since March 19, 2008, when the Pride defeated Fisher College in back-to-back ballgames in Titusville, Fla., that the Regis softball team swept a doubleheader on its Spring Break trip.
The game started off as a pitchers duel, and it looked like one or two runs would be all that would be needed for the victory. Both pitchers - the Pride's Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) and Medaille's Brooke Peters (Lockport, N.Y.) - were dealing in the early going, and in the bottom of the third, it would be the Mavericks who drew first blood. With two away in the inning, senior Sharon Trigilio (East Amherst, N.Y.) doubled to left field, bringing home Liz Minnard (Cortland, N.Y.) for the ballgame's first run. On the throw to the plate, Trigilio advanced to third and would score on a wild pitch during the next at bat, giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Pride wasted no time beginning the comeback effort, cutting the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) led off the inning with a base hit, and after being sacrificed over by Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.), came around to score on an RBI single to right by junior Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.).
Regis would take the lead an inning later after a two-out rally. Freshman Kayla Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) and Rasmussen recorded back to back singles to start the rally, and would come around to score two batters later after the Maverick defense committed three errors in the course of two plays.
The 3-2 lead after four and half innings for McLellan, who was absolutely dealing in the circle. The sophomore allowed just one hit in three innings to the Mavericks after the Pride took the advantage, closing out her third win of the season. McLellan's final line was two earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts in the complete game victory. Peters was also sharp on the day despite the losing effort. In 6.1 innings pitched, the sophomore allowed just one earned run on seven hits. Rasmussen and Napoleone led the way offensively on the evening for the Pride, both picking up a pair of hits in the victory.
Next up for the Pride, they'll play their final two games of their 2018 Spring Break trip with matchups against Hilbert and Wentworth on Friday, while Medaille plays Mary Washington and Cedar Crest on Thursday.
