Softball Bested by Wilkes in First Game of Tuesday Doubleheader

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - The Regis (Mass.) softball team conceded four runs in the top of the fourth inning as the Pride suffered an 8-1 defeat to Wilkes University in the first of two games on Tuesday afternoon at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

With the loss, the Pride moves to 1-2 on the season, while Wilkes improves to 4-3.

The Wilkes offense was the story on the day, getting on the board in the top of the first thanks to the first of four extra base hits they would collect on the day. Freshman Britny Jumalon (Torrance, Calif.) picked up a two-out triple, and would score a batter later on a Pride error to give her team a 1-0 lead.

The lead was short-lived, as Regis got the run back in the bottom of the first. Three straight singles to open the inning from Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.), Kayla Pieta (Middletown, Conn.), and Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) were followed up by a groundball to second by senior Alexa Nejaime (Sandisfield, Mass.), driving in Grimard from third. The Pride, however, couldn't get home Pieta and Rasmussen and the game would go to the second even at one.

Wilkes picked up a single run in the top of the third, but broke the game open with four runs in the fourth. A two-run, two-out single from freshman Megan Magoon (Barnegat, N.J.) to drive in Sarah Gibson (Chico, Calif.) and Christina Gambino proved to be the biggest blow of the inning. Wilkes added single runs in the fifth and sixth to secure the victory.

McLellan got the loss in the circle for the Pride, allowing six earned runs in the loss. The win went to Celine Podlesney (Hazle Twp., Pa.), who allowed just one earned in the complete game victory.

Offensively, Rasmussen was 3-for-4 on the day, with Grimard going 2-for-4 for the Pride. Magoon was the offensive leader for the Colonels, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

Next up for Regis, they'll take on Penn College for the second game of a doubleheader for the Pride.
