NEW ENGLAND PILGRIMS SWEEP PRIDE IN DOUBLEHEADER ACTION

WESTON, Mass.—The New England College Pilgrims allowed just one run by its The Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Regis College Wednesday. A five-run inning in the fifth notched New England's 11-1 victory, and improved its overall record to 13-11 and 12-9 TCCC. Gabrielle Timms (Clark Summit, Pa./Lakeland) blasted a two-run homerun in the first inning for the Pilgrims first score of the game.

Timms, who also pitched, allowed five hits, one run, and stuck-out six of her 24 batters faced. With the loss, Regis College fell to 4-33 overall and 2-21 TCCC. Rachel Cavella (West Roxbury, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) scored Regis' solo run on a Hope Benjamin (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) single.

Cavella reached based on a double, which was 1-of-2 doubles given up by Timms. Benjamin was 1-for-1 at the plate, and had 10 putouts defensively. Kendra Abram (Acushnet, Mass./Bishop Connolly) walked 3-of-4 batters in the second inning, all would eventually score.

Melinda Robbins (Oxford, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch by Abram. Kristen Conners (Weymouth, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and Kristen Dehm (Milford, Conn./Joseph A. Foran) also walked and scored.

Abram (3-19) had two strikeouts, allowed a single, homerun, and gave up nine hits in 29 batters faced. Stephanie Freitag (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet) batted 2-for-3 at the plate, had a RBI, and scored a run. Comparatively, New England had nine hits to Regis' five.

Dehm scored the ninth run for New England, giving the Pilgrims an eight-run advantage in the fifth. Timms and Alyssa Hoot (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) tacked on the final two runs.

Down 10 runs, Regis' Benjamin reached base on a walk. Teammate Shannon Hurley (Billerica, Mass./Arlington Catholic) hit into an 8-to-3 double play. Amanda Carlson (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) was the final out to go down swinging.

(Game 2)

The two TCCC opponents were scoreless through the first two innings until New England scored two runs in the top of the third. The Pilgrims tacked on two more runs in the fourth before Regis College held New England scoreless in the fifth inning

Elizabeth Harrington (Weston, Conn./Weston) scored New England’s first run. She hit a single to reach base, and stole two bases when Timms got the RBI. Dehm tallied the second run of the inning. Robbins and Jessica Kiehl (North Haven, Conn./North Haven) scored for the Pilgrims in the second.

Sarah Porteus (South Wellfleet, Mass./Nauset) had given up four runs by the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth she gave up back-to-back homeruns to Robbins and LiaAnn Linck (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield).

The Pride allowed eight runs in the sixth to fall behind 12-0 after keeping within four runs through five innings.

Porteus allowed 15 hits, 12 runs, had nine errors, and threw just two strike-outs against 37 batters faced.

Linck, Robbins, and Timms would each bat 2-for-4 at the plate, while Linck's and Robbins each hit homeruns in sixth inning. Timms and Harrington tied for a team-high three RBI.

New England had eight hits, and batted around against the Regis College defense. The Pilgrim defense allowed just six hits through six innings. Timms, who also pitched game one, allowed four hits, walked two, and had two strike-outs in five innings pitched. Timms would also earn back-to-back wins.

Briel Lofrano (Plymouth, N.H./St. Joseph’s (Maine)) pitched one inning, struck-out a batter, and faced four Regis College hitters.

Regis College returns to the field April 27 to face Daniel Webster in non-conference play before finishing the season at Lesley on April 28. New England College will host Roger Williams in doubleheader TCCC action April 22.
