Pride Drop Pair of GNAC Matches

NEWTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's volleyball team fell in both matches against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents Rivier, 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19), and Lasell, 3-0 (25-16, 25-9, 25-12).

Rivier 3, Regis 0

Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) and Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.) both led the Pride with seven kills. Sebastian Valdes (Diamond Bar, Calif.) recorded 25 assists and three digs in the match, and Zabdiel Frias (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) also helped on the defensive end with seven digs.

After Rivier went up 2-1, Alves kicked off a string of three straight points for the Pride to go ahead 4-2. With the Pride holding a 7-5 advantage, Rivier responded with five consecutive points to grab a 10-7 lead.

The Raiders were able to extend their lead in the first set by scoring three straight points, kicked off by a kill by Thomas Miller. After going down, 19-14, the Pride were able to score four of the next five points, but it would not be enough as the Raiders followed with five of the following six points to close out the first set.

After Rivier opened the second set by scoring the first three points, Regis took control with five straight points, two of them off kills by Clodomir. With the Pride leading, 7-5, Rivier then scored four of the next five points to take the lead, 9-8. With the score tied, 15-15, the Raiders scored back-to-back points. After a point for the Pride, Rivier was able to score the next six points to separate from the Pride on their way to closing out the second set.

Regis again was able to grab an early lead jumping out, 6-3, after the first nine points. Rivier then responded by rattling off nine of the next 12 points to take a 12-9 advantage. The Pride were able to bring the deficit down to one but were never able to tie the Raiders the rest of the set, as Rivier closed out the match.

Lasell 3, Regis 0

Lasell scored the first three points of the match before Regis made it onto the scoreboard with one of Alves' seven kills of the match. With the Lasers ahead, 6-3, Lasell rattled off five straight points to jump out to an eight-point lead. Regis scored back-to-back points following the Lasers rally, but the Pride were unable to get the deficit under six points the rest of the set.

After a kill by Alves early in the second set cut the Lasers lead to 3-2, a kill by Lasell's Brenden Joyce kicked off a rally of four straight Laser points. Regis scored two of the next three points before the Lasers scored another four straight points. With the Pride trailing, 17-8, the Lasers went on a seven-point run. Regis scored one more point before Dillion DeSouza secured the 25-9 second set win.

In the third set, Regis stayed within two points of the Lasers before Lasell went on a seven-point run. After the Pride earned a point to cut into the Lasell lead, the Lasers again responded with a six-point run to go up, 23-9. Regis earned three more points before Lasell scored the final two points to close out the match.

Regis (3-9, 0-4 GNAC) will face Sage on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. before hosting Eastern Nazarene on Saturday, Feb. 22 at noon.
