Men’s Volleyball Falls In Five-Set Thriller to Emmanuel

BOSTON - The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team went the distance for the third match this season but fell each time, today in a five-set thriller and nearly upsetting Emmanuel in the back end of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference trimatch at Andy Yosinoff Court. Sets scores were 25-27, 25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9.

Middle hitters Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.) shared match-high honors with 15 kills for their respective teams. Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) had a double double with 12 kills and 12 digs with Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Chris Fitta (Warwick, R.I.) adding 12 digs to share team-high honors with Beimel in that category.

Kevin Orsely (San Jose, Calif.) posted a double double (12 kills, 15 digs) for the Saints (13-13, 7-4 GNAC) who rallied from a set down to avoid the upset. Max Gottuso (Long Beach, N.Y.) delivered a match-high 16 digs.

The match opened with an exciting extra-point set one win by the Pride (7-18, 2-9 GNAC). Regis trailed by four in the late stages of the set before kills from Krahl and Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) spearheaded a 5-0 run to put their team up 19-18. Emmanuel reclaimed the lead and went up 23-21 but the Pride responded, winning five of the set's last six points to go up a set.

Emmanuel led most of the way in evening the match with its set two win. Alex Silva's kill gave the Saints a 9-8 lead, one they would not relinquish. The Pride made a late run to shave a four-point lead down to one on an Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) kill, but four straight Emmanuel points sealed the win and evened the match.

Regis pulled out another extra-point win and nearly took the match with a set four win, but back-to-back kills by Manuel Velez (San Jose, Costa Rica) lifted the Saints to a 25-23 win and pushed the match to a fifth and deciding set. Emmanuel rode the momentum into set five, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and winning going away.

Regis enters its final week of the regular season, next hosting Mount Ida Tuesday, Apr. 3 at 7:00 p.m. Emmanuel is next in action at Johnson & Wales (RI) on Thursday, Apr. 5 with a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
