Men's Volleyball Falls To Rivier, Sweeps Pine Manor To Earn Trimatch Split

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team hosted its first trimatch of the season, falling in four sets to Rivier (25-15, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play before sweeping Pine Manor (25-18, 25-19, 25-20), Saturday at Higgins Court. The Pride moves to 4-9 after the split but fell to 1-4 in league play after the loss to the Raiders.

Regis appeared outmatched in its trimatch opener against Rivier but managed to avoid a sweep and push the match to a fourth set. Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) delivered match highs of 10 kills and five blocks in the loss with Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) adding four kills and seven digs.

Cam Roth's (Coventry, R.I.) nine kills led the Raiders (14-6, 5-0 GNAC) who dominated the first two sets and looked prime for the sweep. Rivier led by just a point early in the opening set but Khaynen Yocca's (Pittsburgh, Pa.) kill sparked an 8-1 run capped by a Roth kill to push the lead to 17-10. The lead swelled to as many as nine points before the Raiders sealed the win.

Rivier scored the frame's first 11 points in set two led by a strong defensive effort that saw a pair of blocks each from Yocca and Grant Andler (Chicago, Ill.). Regis wouldn't let the set get out of hand though with Krahl posting back-to-back kills late in the frame, but it would be too little too late.

The Pride responded with a solid third set, bending late but never breaking. A Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) kill helped his team to a 9-4 lead with Krahl and Ramos posting timely kills to keep Rivier at arms length. The Raiders got to within a point on a Matt Heckler (Semi Valley, Calif.) kill then later tied the match, but Beimel drilled back-to-back kills to claim the 25-23 win for the Pride.

Rivier closed the match out in the fourth set but Regis would respond with a sweep of Pine Manor to cap the day. Krahl and Ramos were the high hitters for the Pride. Krahl hit at an impressive .714 clip for a match-high 15 kills with Ramos adding 10 kills of his own. Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.) added six kills with Angel Pagan (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) adding a team-high seven digs.

Derick Speight (Clinton, Md.) led the Gators (1-9) with 11 kills and Nathan Matthews (Vinton, Va.) added team highs of 19 assists and eight digs.

Regis won each set in similar fashion, taking a tight score and pulling away late for the win. Set one saw Krahl spearhead a 5-0 run with a pair of kills before Clodomir and Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) sealed the win late with kills of their own.

Set two would prove to be a bit tougher as the Pride trailed by as many as four points midway through. Regis would eventually grab the momentum as consecutive Alves kills highlighted a 10-2 run as Regis won going away. The Pride took care of business in the third and what proved to be the final set to complete the sweep.

Adding to the Gator effort was Dion Johnson's (Las Vegas, Nev.) eight kills and five digs.

Next up for the Pride is another match with Pine Manor, again at Regis on Wednesday, March 21 at 6:00 p.m. Rivier looks to stay perfect in GNAC play, next hosting Emerson this Tuesday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m.
