Men's Tennis Dominates In Singles En Route to 5-4 Win Over USMMA

ORLANDO - The Regis (Mass.) men's tennis team retook the court after a day off, getting back on the winning track with a 5-4 victory over the US Merchant Marine Academy, Thursday at the USTA National Campus.

The match began with singles play where the Pride (8-3) finished within one victory of the match after winning on the No. 3-6 courts. The Pride tandem of Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas) and Tim Miller (North Attleboro, Mass.) notched the match clincher as the first to finish in doubles play, beating Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) and Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) 8-6 at the three.

Singles play saw the first four completed matches go the Pride's way, all in dominant fashion. Cam Charbonneau (Guilford, Mass.) at the four and Evan Russell (East Wareham, Mass.) at the six both won with 6-0, 6-1 results. Nolan Bebarta (Danville, Calif.) topped Deeter 6-1, 6-0 on the No. 3 court with Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) topping Daniel Kim (Porter Ranch, Calif.) 6-0, 6-2 at the five.

USMMA (1-3) would not allow the contest to be decided in singles play however, winning a pair of matches to stay in the hunt heading to doubles action. At first singles, Chris Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) fell 6-2, 6-3 to Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and Luke Horton (Bass Harbor, Maine) lost at the two to Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.

Despite the Mariners winning at one and two doubles, Weiner and Miller's win captured the match for the Pride.

Regis closes the trip tomorrow with a 1:00 p.m. match against Penn State-Berks.
