Bastianelli, Zernitsky Garner GNAC Weekly Honors

WINTHROP, Mass. - Senior Cassidy Bastianelli (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Jessica Zernitsky (Newton, Mass.) of the Regis (Mass.) men's and women's swimming & diving teams have both received Great Northeast Athletic Conference weekly swimming honors. Announced Monday afternoon, Bastianelli was named the GNAC Male Athlete of the Week, while Zernitsky was named Female Rookie of the Week.

Bastianelli wins the award for the second time this season, previously taking home the honor two weeks ago on Jan. 16. The business management major won four events over the weekend at a tri-meet hosted by Bridgewater State. He started off the day in the anchor position of the Pride's 200 yard medley relay team, which won the event by just .15 seconds, finishing with a time of 1:39.60. Individually, Bastianelli would go on to win the 200 yard freestyle, 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle later in the afternoon.

Zernitsky's Rookie of the Week nod is her first of the season, and makes her the first member of either the men's or women's teams to be named GNAC Rookie of the Week this season. At the Bridgewater State tri-meet, Zernitsky was part of the Regis 200 yard medley relay and 200 yard freestyle relay teams that both finished in second place. Zernitsky won the only two individual races she swam in on Saturday as well, taking the top spot in the 50 yard freestyle and 50 yard butterfly.

Bastianelli, Zernitsky and the rest of the Pride will be off for just over two weeks before participating in the New England Championships. The four-day tournament kicks off on Feb. 16 at the University of Rhode Island.
