BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's lacrosse team picked up its second consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, downing Wheelock College in New England Collegiate Conference play. The Wildcats move to 1-8 and 0-2 in the NECC while the Pride improve to 3-7 and 2-0 in conference.
The two teams were locked in a close first quarter battle. Senior Alex Ferran (Miami, Fla.) opened the scoring with 11:23 to go but with just under 10 to play in the period, rookie Jared Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) tied things up at 1-1. Still, Ferran would add a second and junior Danny Rancano (Miami, Fla.) tacked on one more to give Regis a slim 3-1 lead headed to the second.
In the second period, neither team could find the back of the net for the first five minutes before Trainor netted his second of the contest to halve the deficit and pull Wheelock within 3-2 at the 9:06 mark.
That would be as close as the home team would get, however, as junior AJ Karofsky (Barrington, R.I.) kicked off a 7-0 scoring tear that would have Regis cruising up 10-2 at the break.
The visitors continued to pour it on in the second half as they shutout Wheelock 5-0 in the third but it was rookie Luke McKinnon (Cambridge, Mass.) who would score the final goal of the game and even the fourth quarter tally at 1-1.
The Wildcats were led by Trainor who scored twice and McKinnon who matched him with two points on a goal and assist. Rookei Zac Zelinski (Norton, Mass.) had a team-high three caused turnovers while sophomore Gary Broad (Shelton, Conn.) scooped up a team-best five ground balls. Classmate Josh DiMassa (Branford, Conn.) suffered the loss in net despite making nine saves.
The Pride featured six players with at least three points led by Ferran who poured in five goals and added two assists for a game-high seven points. Senior Nick Romig (Dedham, Mass.) contributed a team-best three assists while rookie Brian Wagner (Melrose, Mass.) racked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Senior D.J. Barrile (Medford, Mass.) earned the win in between the pipes with six stops.
Wheelock returns to action tomorrow when they host Green Mountain at 12:00 p.m. Regis continues their NECC slate when they host Becker on April 12 at 4:00 p.m.
