Pride Winning Streak Snapped at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Regis College women's volleyball team was unable to come back against the Fighting Scots of Gordon College Saturday morning, falling 3-1 in a non-conference match at the Bennett Center, breaking the Pride winning streak at three.

Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) led the team with nine kills and added eight digs. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) posted eight kills and Mica van der Meulen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) collected 16 digs.

The Fighting Scots rattled off the first five points of the match before Whalen put the Pride on the board with her first kill of the match. With Gordon leading the set 11-4, Regis rallied for the next three points to make it a four-point deficit. Gordon stood strong, building a substantial lead before taking the first set 25-16.

Gordon started the second half scoring three points before the Pride answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points. After Regis cruised out to a 16-9 lead, the Fighting Scots scored four straight points to cut the deficit to three. After the Pride extended the lead out to five, Gordon again came back in the set to make it 22-21. Regis responded by scoring the next three points to win the set 25-21.

In the third set, Regis was the team out to a quick start, going up 8-3 before Gordon fired off four quick points in succession to cut the Pride lead to one. Regis led the Scots 18-15 before the Scots earned the next eight points to go up by five, going on to win the third set 25-19.

The Fighting Scots were up in the fourth set 11-9 when they went on a six-point run. Gordon and the Pride traded the next six points before Regis went on a run of their own to close the gap down to two, 20-18. It would not be enough as the Pride fell in the set 25-21.

Gordon (8-8, 1-2 CCC) will play Curry in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

Regis (6-11, 2-2 GNAC) will travel to take on Colby-Sawyer in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. They will then play both Fitchburg State and WPI on Saturday, Oct. 12 in Worcester before facing Saint Joseph's College of Maine Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Higgins Court.
