WESTON, Mass. – Regis College could not overcome the varied offense of Gordon College, as the Fighting Scots defeated the Pride, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20), Thursday night in a non-conference women's collegiate volleyball match at Higgins Court.
Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) notched her fifth double-double in the last six matches and 13th double-double overall this season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Lauren Butt (Topsfield, Mass.) finished with six kills and three total blocks. Mica van der Meulen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) ended up with 16 assists and four service aces, and Caroline Fuentes (Downey, Calif.) contributed 10 digs and two service aces.
Regis scored the first three points of the match, but Gordon responded with six of the next seven points. After the Pride retook the lead with a short 4-1 scoring run, the Scots put together a 7-2 scoring stretch, led by Amanda Snyder with three kills. Gordon closed out the first set with a 10-2 scoring run, punctuated by a kill from Marla Batson.
Gordon (15-12) raced out to an 11-3 lead in the second set, with Mackenzie Hinds, Jordan Shaduk, and Jamie Tafoya earning two kills apiece during that stretch. Down 22-12 after kills by Shaduk and Tafoya, the Pride fought back with a 7-2 scoring run, led by two service aces by van der Meulen, but a Regis service error, one of 11 in the match, clinched the second set for the Scots.
Two kills apiece by Veasey and MacKenzie Emco (Sutton, Mass.) allowed the Pride to take a two-point lead early in the third set, but Gordon responded with a 6-1 scoring run to pull ahead, 10-7. A solo block and a kill by Butt pulled the Pride into a 10-10 tie, but the Scots would score eight of the next nine points to establish a 20-13 advantage. Down match point, Regis rattled off five straight points to extend the match, but a Pride attack error gave the set and the match to the visitors.
Hinds led the Scots with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage, plus she earned eight digs, while Snyder finished with seven kills and Tafoya added six kills. Ashlyn Gergins collected 28 assists, three service aces, and three total blocks, and libero Jenny Curtiss led the Gordon defense with 10 digs to go along with five assists and two service aces.
Before the match, Erika Andreoli (Naugatuck, Conn.), Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas), Emco, Fuentes, Victoria Godfroy (Dracut, Mass.), and Emma Morales Cestero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) were honored in the annual Senior Night presentation.
Regis (12-14) heads to West Hartford, Conn., for its final two matches of the regular season, facing host St. Joseph at 11 a.m. and Emmanuel at 1 p.m. The Pride are looking to qualify for the eight-team GNAC Tournament for the second straight year.
