BOSTON, Mass. - Sophomore Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) had a career day for the Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team as the Pride split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at the Andy Yosinoff Gym on the campus of Emmanuel College Saturday afternoon. The Pride opened the day by defeating the host Saints in four sets before falling to Lasell College in four sets in the second match.
With the split, the Pride moves to 11-14 overall this season and 7-4 in GNAC play. The Pride also clinched a berth in the GNAC tournament with the win over Emmanuel.
Regis at Emmanuel:
For what would prove to be just the first time on the day, Veasey recorded a career-high in kills with 18 in the first match as the Pride defeated Emmanuel in four sets in match number one of the afternoon. The set scores were 19-25, 25-8, 25-15, 25-17.
The Saints came out strong in the Pride's first match of the days, posting a 25-19 win in the opening set, but Regis responded with three consecutive sets of strong play to come back for the 3-1 win on the match.
Senior Shay Faber (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) shined for the Pride in the match, finishing a dig shy of a triple-double with 12 kills, 12 assists and nine digs.
Regis vs. Lasell:
Veasey was a force on the Pride's offense in its second match of the afternoon, but her performance was not enough as Lasell got past Regis in four sets. Set scores in the match were 25-19, 25-14, 20-25, 25-19 in favor of the Lasers.
Veasey set a career-high for the second time on the day, putting down 20 kills in the losing effort. Veasey was just as strong on the defensive side of the ball as well, recording 14 digs. Veasey, however, was not the only player on the floor to light up the scoresheet, as Lasell's Olivia Addington (Orange, Calif.) had 20 kills of her own, going along with 20 digs.
After a second set that saw the Pride fall behind 0-2 and hit just -.033, Regis came back to make things interesting by winning the third set. The Lasers appeared to be on their way to a sweep at the midway point of the set, leading the Pride 13-9, but with Faber at the service line, Regis would score the next nine points to go ahead 18-13 and take command of the set. The 9-0 run included four service aces from Faber and three of Veasey's 20 kills.
The fourth set was close in the early stages, but Lasell would run away with it just before the midway point to secure the win. After a Lasell setting error evened the set at 9-9, the Lasers would go on a 12-4 run to take a commanding 21-13 lead. The Pride would battle back with a 6-2 run of their own, but the surge proved to be too little, too late and the Lasers would clinch the match on an Addington service ace.
Next up for the Pride, they will wrap up conference play on Thursday by travelling to Rivier for a 7:00 p.m. match.
