Women's Volleyball Turned Back By Wentworth In Four Sets

WESTON, Mass. - Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) and MacKenzie Emco (Sutton, Mass.) both delivered eight kills, Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) had a team-high 10 digs but it wasn't enough as the Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team fell in four sets to Wentworth in the the first of two Regis Fest matches, Saturday at Higgins Court. Set scores were 25-12, 25-13, 20-25, 25-16.

Several Wentworth players had monster matches including outside hitter Claire Quick (Mission Viejo, Calif.) who drilled 14 kills while also boasting a match-high 22 digs. Leah Rogoz (Woodridge, Ill.) had 17 kills (17-2-35) and nine digs with Lexie Cambray (Bedford, N.H.) adding 12 digs.

The Pride appeared to be outclassed in the first two sets. After scoring the first three points of the opening frame, Regis saw Wentworth go on a 12-2 run to take a 12-5 lead. Back-to-back kills from Rachel Bartels (Edinburg, Texas) kept the Pride in the set but the Leopards pulled away, winning the final points bookended by kills from Rogoz.

Set two saw more of the same. Kills from Veasey and Nicole Connolly (San Mateo, Calif.) kept their team within two points before watching Wentworth go on a 9-1 run to open up a 16-6 lead. Three straight Pride points cut into the lead but the Leopards clinched it on back-to-back kills by Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.).

Regis crawled back in the match, nearly leading from start to finish in its game three win. Trailing by two points early, Shay Faber's (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) kill and three straight aces helped the Pride open up a 9-4 lead. Wentworth would shave lead to just one point late in the set, but Regis kept the Leopards at bay and outlasted them down the stretch.

The set three win proved not to be the start of a comeback however, as Wentworth took over midway through set four, finishing on a 12-4 run to take the match.
