WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team was unable to complete the tri-match sweep on Saturday afternoon, as they were swept by Simmons College 25-22, 25-17, 25-20 in the team's second match of the day at Higgins Court.
With the loss, the Pride drops to 5-10 overall on the season, and suffers its first Great Northeast Athletic Conference loss with a 2-1 record. Simmons completes the sweep of the day, previously beating Albertus Magnus to improve to 8-6 overall, 2-0 GNAC.
The match's opening set appeared as though it could have gone either way, as the set featured nine ties and five lead changes. The Pride jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the set thanks to three consecutive Simmons attack errors, but the Sharks would climb right back in before things got out of hand, scoring four of the next five points to cut the deficit to 5-4. The teams would battle back and forth, working toward a 19-19 tie, but three kills and a clinching service ace from freshman Jarene Harberts (Naples, Fla.) down the stretch propelled a 6-3 run to end the set and give the Sharks the early lead.
Trailing 9-8 midway through the second set, the Sharks used an 11-2 run to surge away from the Pride and take a 19-11 lead. Of the 11 points scored by the Sharks on the run, seven of them came on either service or attack errors from the Pride. Regis would mount a small comeback, working the deficit down to 20-15, but the lead proved too much to overcome, as the Sharks clinched the point on a kill from Harberts.
Simmons kills from Allison Camboulives (Colchester, Conn.) and Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) helped the Sharks jump out to a quick 6-2 lead in the final set, and they never looked back after that. The Pride couldn't climb out of the hole, and a kill from Morgan Lauvray (Murrieta, Calif.) closed out the afternoon.
Harberts led all players in the match with 10 kills in the win. Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) led Regis with six kills, while Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) and MacKenzie Emco (Sutton, Mass.) each added five.
Next up for the Pride, they'll continue GNAC action with a home match against Norwich on Wednesday night. Johnson & Wales is next on the docket for the Sharks, as the Wildcats will visit Simmons on Tuesday evening.
