Women’s Volleyball Drops Two On Opening Day

BELTON, Texas – The Regis (Mass.) women's volleyball team got off to a rocky start to open the 2017 season, falling to Mary Hardin-Baylor 25-6, 25-12, 25-13 and Hardin-Simmons 25-23, 26-24, 25-21 at the UMHB Invitational, Friday at the Mayborn Campus Center.

The season opener versus host UMHB saw Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) drill a team-high six kills but hit .045 as the Pride (0-2) appeared outmanned by the host Cru, hitting negative for the match at -.177. Sydney Trusty (Durham, Conn.) and Caroline Fuentes (Downey, Calif.) shared team-high honors each with five digs. Haley Schulte (Fullerton, Calif.) led the Pride with 10 assists.

Sarah Paolini (Kalispell, Mont.) led the way for UMHB, recording a match-high seven kills and hitting a scorching .778 (7-0-9). She also added a match-high four blocks. Natasha Evans (Edna, Texas) posted 11 digs with Corinne Novak (Georgetown, Texas) and Miranda Klein (Georgetown, Texas) each adding six kills.

Regis had a better go of it in the second match of the day against Hardin-Simmons (1-1) but suffered another sweep nonetheless. Trusty performed well on both sides of the net, recording a team-high nine kills with just one error while also posting six digs. Veasey had six kills, a pair digs and a block with Fuentes leading the Pride again with 10 digs.

For Hardin-Simmons, Mary Johnson (Dallas, Texas) posted 20 digs and Meagan Bauer (Spring, Texas) added 10 kills, both match highs.

Regis returns to the court tomorrow for the final two matches of the tournament. The Pride faces Texas Tyler at 11:00 a.m. then close with another match against host UMHB at 3:30 p.m. Both times are Eastern Standard Time.
