Akanegbu Delivers A Pair Of Top 20 Throws At New England Championships

WESTON, Mass. - Kate Cowden (Wilmington, Mass.) placed sixth in the shot put, and Dan LaFlamme and ChiChi Akanegbu (North Easton, Mass.) both delivered a pair of top 20 performances in the weight throw to highlight the Regis (Mass.) track and field teams at the Division III New England Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.

The women's squad competed at Springfield College but unfortunately without sprinters Fatima St. Hilaire (Danvers, Mass.) and Bernice Boateng (Danielson, Conn.) who both, while posting qualifying times, were unable to compete due to injuries. Cowden's 11.60 meter shot throw led the Pride effort with Akanegbu placing 15th with a throw of 11.05 meters.

Adding to her top 20 shot put effort, Akanegbu placed 14th in the weight throw with a distance of 13.55 meters. Elisabeth Cooke (East Longmeadow, Mass.), competing in her first New England championships, threw 10.12 meters.

LaFlamme was the lone New England competitor for the Pride in the men's competition which took place at Springfield College in the Virtue Field House. He had an excellent showing in his first New England championships appearance. His toss in the weight throw of 13.89 was just fractions of a meter off of 19th place.

Several Pride track and field members will compete Sunday at the Division III New England Indoor USATF Championships held in Cambridge, Mass. and hosted by Harvard University. The event begins at 10:00 a.m.
