Four School Records Fall as Pride Impresses on Senior Day

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's and women's track and field teams had a strong conclusion to their 2017 regular season at the Regis Pride Classic Sunday afternoon at Regis Stadium. Between the men and the women, four set new school records and two qualified for the New England Championships next weekend.

On the men's side, sophomore Shane Romanchick (Trumbull, Conn.) shattered his own school record in the 10,000 meters by 46 seconds, finishing with a time of 35:11.91. Freshman Jovan Sematimba (Burlington, Mass.) broke the school record in the 1,500 meters with a personal best time of 4:18.42. Not to be outdone, the men's 4x800 meter relay team of Sematimba, Matt Norton (Weymouth, Mass.), Kyle Gillen-Hughes (Reading, Mass.), and Fred Mathieu (Miami, Fla.) set a new school record with a time of 8:47.37.

Norton also placed second in the men's 800 meter run with a time of 2:03.05 and Mathieu place fourth overall in the men's 200 meter dash with a time of 23.40.

A pair of women's school records were set on the afternoon as well, both coming from freshman. Maddie Boucias (Buckland, Mass.) broke an 18-year-old school record in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:32.59, while Bernice Boateng (Danielson, Conn.) broke a 20-year-old school record with a time of 12.88 in the 100 meter dash, qualifying her for the New England Championships. Boucias also placed second in the ,1500 meter run with a time of 5:10.21.

Sophomore Cassie Froio (Tewksbury, Mass.) put up personal bests in both the 100 meter dash (13.71) and the 200 meter dash (29.02), placing fourth and 12th overall, respectively.

In the field events, sophomore thrower Liz Ksepka (Calais, Vt.) set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 11.07 meters, becoming the third member of the Pride to qualify for the New England Championships in the women's shot put this season, joining freshman ChiChi Akanegbu (North Easton, Mass.) and junior Kate Cowden (Wilmington, Mass.).

Sophomore Taylor Garner (Richmond, Vt.) won the men's discus throw with a personal best toss of 37.15 meters. Teammate Dan LaFlamme (Watertown, Conn.) finished in fourth with a personal best throw of 36.33 meters. Cowden finished third in the women's discus throw (37.07) with teammates Ksepka, Akanegbu, and Abbie Cooke (Abington, Mass.) finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Six student-athletes will represent the Pride in next weekend's New England Championships at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. Events are scheduled to take place both Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10:00 a.m. both days.
