Carly Donovan Named GNAC Women’s Tennis Player of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – After winning all four matches she played last week, junior Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Donovan dominated her opponents in two dual matches over the past week. Last Thursday at Clark, she teamed with Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) for an 8-1 victory at number one doubles, and then she won her singles match in the number one position (6-0, 6-2) to help the Pride defeat the Cougars, 8-1.

Saturday, Regis defeated St. Joseph (Conn.), 8-1, with Donovan again sweeping her matches. After Donovan and McCormack won their doubles match in the first position, 8-4, Donovan posted a double bagel in winning her singles match at number one singles (6-0, 6-0).

"Carly is a great story for a number of reasons, but probably the biggest is her perseverance. She has a great ability to overcome adversity, and after some difficult match-ups earlier this fall, it was nice to see her earn some victories this past week," Andy White, head women's tennis coach, said.

Donovan earns the first GNAC weekly award for a Pride women's tennis player this season. This is the second career Player of the Week award for Donovan, as she was previously honored Sept. 24, 2018, plus she picked up three Rookie of the Week awards during her freshman season of 2017-18.

Regis, currently 7-2 overall and 4-2 within the GNAC, will host Worcester State Thursday, Oct. 10, beginning at 3:30 p.m. The Pride will then close the regular season at Albertus Magnus Saturday, Oct. 12, starting at 2 p.m.
